- Swedenborg, Emanuel
- (1688–1772)Philosopher, Mystic and Sect Founder.Swedenborg was born in Stockholm, the son of a distinguished clergyman. He was educated at the University of Uppsala and, after a period of travel in Europe, he became an official in the Swedish Board of Mines. He held this position until his retirement in 1747. Initially he was interested in the nature of the soul and his early works include A Philosophical Argument on the Infinite and Final Cause of Creation. After experiencing a mystical conversion, which included a vision of Jesus Christ, he dedicated himself to spreading his own version of Christianity. This was expressed in many works, including The True Christian Religion, which appeared the year before his death. His doctrines were influenced by neo-Platonism; God is described as invisible, spaceless and timeless; the world is sustained by spirits and angels and Jesus is God the Father manifest on earth. In 1787 his followers formed the New Jerusalem Church and there are congregations of Swedenborgians today in Europe, the United States of America and Australia.C.U.
